How to build a split-flap departure board for your station

Start from the reading distance. A concourse board that people scan from ten meters works best at eight to twelve rows — one per service — with columns split across departure time, destination, platform, and status. A platform-edge screen showing only the next two trains reads better at three or four oversized rows. Fork a transport template, then set rows and columns in the editor to match; the flip animation renders at 60 FPS in the browser, so even large grids stay smooth on an ordinary smart TV.

Feed the board from your timetable. Point a live data widget at any JSON endpoint — a GTFS-realtime bridge, your operations API, or a simple hosted file your dispatch tool writes — and map fields to the time, destination, and status columns. A repeater renders one row per service and connected boards flip to new values in under a second, so DELAYED and BOARDING statuses land as fast as your feed publishes them. Live data sources are part of the Business plan, which also covers unlimited displays.

Use scenes to cover the whole picture on one screen. A common rotation gives departures 45 seconds, arrivals 20, and a service-alerts scene 10, each duration set per scene so the loop runs unattended. For a network of stops, fork the same template once per location, adjust each board's routes and platform labels, and manage everything from one dashboard — an alert added there pushes to every connected screen in real time, which matters most exactly when service goes sideways.
